Facing Facts Workshop: Supporting multistakeholder hate response systems through online learning

16/12/2025

On 27 November, we organised a workshop to present our latest research findings on the needs and motivations of our online learning community of practice. The workshop served the purpose to identify next steps to implement our research recommendations.

Fourteen participants joined our workshop across several institutions including representatives from the Commission’s DG Education and DG Justice, CEPOL, OSCE-ODIHR, Council of Europe HELP programme, the Learnovate Centre at Trinity College Dublin, The Irish Police Service, the Austrian Ministry of Interior, two Facing Facts Online tutors and Network member CLAIM.

The Workshop started with a warm welcome from Facing Facts Network Director Melissa Sonnino and a tour de table of participants. Senior Research and Policy Advisor Joanna Perry provided a short summary of the research objectives, methods and findings and proceeded to present the recommendations.

The recommendations of our research suggest that future efforts should focus on policy alignment for hate crime and hate speech training alongside robust evaluation, strengthened multi-stakeholder learning and strategic leadership that supports needs-driven, high-quality online education.

Participants shared experiences and challenges in designing and delivering online learning programmes. Discussions focused on strategies for making online learning engaging, ensuring that the design and development phases are adequately resourced, and addressing the specific challenges of delivering courses to different target groups with varying levels of access and technology support.
