CLAIM’s press release: increase of anti-Muslim incidents
14/12/2023
Berlin, 4 December 2023 – At the beginning of November, CLAIM issued a warning of an acute increase in anti-Muslim racism in Germany. CLAIM has already documented 187 cases of violent anti-Muslim attacks, insults, threats and discrimination in the period 9 October – 29 November 2023. The incidents include over 149 attacks against individuals or groups, including families and groups that were attacked in public spaces. 24 attacks were directed against religious institutions – including the desecration of Muslim tombs and attacks on mosques. This means that the documented incidents are already above the previous year’s level. The recorded cases relate exclusively to the offline area and do not cover hate speech on the internet. Overall, it can be assumed that there is a serious number of unreported anti-Muslim incidents that have not yet been reported or recorded. Read more here (in German).
You can find these numbers in our Facing Facts Toolkit.
In its press release of 2 November 2023, CLAIM had already called for urgent action to combat anti-Muslim racism and the necessary protection of those affected, as well as the necessary nationwide and comprehensive expansion of monitoring and advisory structures and their funding.
